@Jo-Jo Eumerus: if you use extracted image, you could separate text and it easier for other wikis to translate
Possible Interiors of TRAPPIST-1 Exoplanets
Based on precise measurements of the plante densities
  • a) no Core
    • Rocky surface, iron mixed uniformly with other elements throughout the interior
  • b) Mantle + Core
    • Rocky surface, with an iron-rich core that is proportionally smaller than Earth's
  • c) Ocean + Mantle + Large Core
    • Deep Ocean layer on surface with larger iron-rich core
    • This is only possible for the cooler, outer 4 planets

Sure, but that's not what I am asking for - this sort of text is too long for the caption. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 06:07, 13 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jo-Jo Eumerus: keep caption short, put rest of text in article (s. above) --Mrmw (talk) 08:16, 13 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd still prefer a version with some of the text included. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 15:03, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is always preferred to take the text out of the image and put it in captions. (1) It is easier to make textual updates. (2) It is easier to translate and reuse for Wikimedia projects in other languages. (3) It adapts to mobile better. (4) Screen readers can easily read what the image is trying to say without the presence of an alt text. (5) It makes the file size smaller. Overall, I do not see an overwhelming benefit for a version with the text included. --Designism (talk) 23:15, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request
I've been trying to repair files that are broken and doesn't have a thumbnail, and dimensions 0 x 0 px. I've had success mostly but these five files I'm unable to repair. Can anyone here make a try? My browser can render all of them except the PNG but Wikimedia can't render any of the files. All of the GIF files are animated. --Jonteemil (talk) 14:21, 23 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
@Jonteemil: WinHistoryInGIF.gif has been deleted. The two other GIFs were fixable by letting FFmpeg recreate them. E.g. ffmpeg -i path_to_original.gif path_to_new.gif. I don't know whether it's possible to fix the PNG or the JPG. It's interesting that Salto Zulma 12.jpg is broken considering that the other 23 "Salto Zulma" images are fine. The PNG seems to have been superseded by Bahçeşehir İlçesi.jpg, so I requested a speedy deletion. TilmannR (talk) 00:15, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This user 痛 is too busy to edit it 61.111.253.9 14:09, 13 August 2023 (UTC)". As this source is more reliable than the one used for the original SVG it might be wise to overwrite it, if overwriting is against the rules then it might be best to upload it simply entitled "制誥之寳 - Academia Sinica Museum.svg".Reply[reply]

Fixing up the Seal of Pingnan Guo[edit]

Article(s): en:Panthay Rebellion, en:Du Wenxiu, and any other pages relating to the Panthay Rebellion

Request
So the current illustration of the seal of Pingnan Guo isn't very representative to say the least; it's based on a poorly drawn gif from 2011 that's poorly mashed a lot of the seal script characters together. The characters are supposed to read 總統兵馬大元帥杜 in Chinese seal script and قائد جميع المسلمين in Arabic. I think the current style of seal illustrations would be best to depict this. Licensing tutorial en.svg[edit]

  1. it's saying "The source code of this SVG is invalid due to 3 errors." is that true?
  2. if yes, should it be fixed?
  3. if yes, could someone plz fix it?

thx a lot!--RZuo (talk) 13:50, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@RZuo: It is true and should be fixed. You can click invalid to go to the W3C validation of the file. In this case, the errors are caused by circle elements with d attributes. I don't have permission to overwrite the file, so I haven't looked into the issues in detail, but it should be a fairly straightforward fix. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 04:50, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@RZuo:
Generally, inconsequential validation errors in SVG files can be ignored. See Help:SVG.
Many validation errors are reasonable extensions such as aria-* or data-* attributes. SVG 2.0 is also introducing new attributes that SVG 1.1 validators will flag as errors. For the licensing tutorial case, the d attributes on svg:circle elements are incorrect, but they do not hurt much and do not need to be corrected right now. The fix also needs an admin's time. (I tried fixing it but ran into its file protection.)
There are other subtle costs with doing minor fixes to files. It tickles watch lists. Some users have gone on crusades to validate syntax or to minimize file size. The notion is commendable, but it consumes other users' time and frequently introduces errors or other issues. Users' viewpoints are often different: some users will delete metadata that includes author and license information.
If it ain't broke, then don't fix it.
FWIW, I am a believer in strong typing, validation, and removing warnings, but I am also pragmatic. If a user is uploading a file for other reasons, then that is a good time to fix validation issues.

i want a copy without errors, because i am making a new version in a different language and dont want to propagate the errors.
as long as the errors are not fixed, they will be carried over as more versions are uploaded, so this file should be fixed. RZuo (talk) 07:14, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Pashtun tribal banners[edit]

Request
I am asking you to make three banners from the time of the Anglo-Afghan war, there were many more, but no more are needed, and the others are not documented. [1]
  1. Flag captured at Jellalabad, It's the one in the middle, but the graphics are old and inaccurate, according to the photo the green frame is actually more yellow, so are the fringes. The inscription is the Shahad's confession of faith.
  2. Flag captured at Ghazni which looks like this in the picture, written are the names of the first 4 caliphs placed opposite each other (Abu Bakr أَبُو بَكْرٍ, ‘Umar عُمَر, Uthman عُثْمَان and Ali عَلِيّ)
  3. Flag captured in Waziristan, it was drawn in this book, but in the photo you can see 2 crosses and one "X", I don't know their color so make them black, the flag is with white and red stripes. Crosses do not have Christian connotations and are one of the patterns woven on carpets to bring good luck.

Arms of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland after Richard Cromwell (eight days in May 1659)[edit]

Article(s): [[]]

Request
At present, Commons lacks a full complement of the arms used by the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland. We are missing the final arms of 1659, after the deposition of Richard Cromwell. According to George Vertue (plate XXIV here), the third seal of the Commonwealth depicted the arms without the Cromwell inescutcheon and without the normal supporters – two non-descript angels clutching vegetation (laurel crown, palm frond and laurel branch) in their place. It would be nice to have an SVG version of this coat of arms, as well as of the shield alone (File:Arms of the Protectorate (1653–1659).svg with the inescutcheon removed) and of the banner of arms (File:Standard of Oliver Cromwell (1653–1659).svg with the inescutcheon removed). It would seem from the seals that different versions of the protectorate-era arms existed, or were intended to exist, for the three different ex-kingdoms: a seal for Irish use has the harp in the second quarter (plate XXV) – so it would be good to have shields of arms and banners of arms for those variations too. Anglo-Irish royal arms of William III in spring 1689: England quartering Ireland[edit]

Article(s): e.g. en:William III of England

Request
Please create SVGs for the royal coat of arms in England and Ireland in spring 1689 using existing elements. According to Charles Oman's "Caddinets and a Forgotten Version of the Royal Arms" and Adrian Ailes's "Silent ambassadors of the State: symbols of national identity on the Great Seals and coins of the United Kingdom", the arms of William III between 13 February and 11 April 1689 (i.e. before recognition of William by the Scots Parliament) consisted of England quartered with Ireland only, without any Scottish arms, and with the Tudor dragon in place of the Stuart unicorn. Apparently this design was made into a Great Seal before becoming obsolete, and still exists on a caddinet, formerly among the royal plate collection, sold off to William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale, and reacquired by the royal collection in 1975. In simple terms, the Scottish red lion and silver unicorn must come out of the pre-Revolution arms, with the lion being replaced by a second harp and the unicorn replaced by the red dragon. Heraldic banners would also be desirable, but not essential. GPinkerton (talk) 17:44, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This Visio file has extraneous elements within its text elements:

<text x="17.23" y="797.46" class="st2" v:langID="1036">
  <v:paragraph v:horizAlign="1"/>
  <v:tabList/>
  Toutes les parties

  <tspan x="31.95" dy="1.2em" class="st3">jugement </tspan>
  ?
</text>

The extraneous elements confuse SVG Translate. IIRC, SVG Translate will also object to #text nodes mixed with tspan elements. Glrx (talk) 00:06, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Here is a template for the signs with size 500×500px. Just set the background color, text color, and the text. The background color is not right for G1, but a color picker can find the RGB values. Code can be viewed at File:Test.svg or archive image.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<svg
   xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"
   version="1.1"
   viewBox="0 0 500 500"

   font-family="Liberation Sans, sans-serif"
   font-size="350"
   font-weight="bold"
   text-anchor="middle">

  <!-- set the background color -->
  <rect width="100%" height="100%" fill="#FFFF00" />

  <!-- set the text and color -->
  <text x="250" y="375" fill="black">G1</text>
</svg>

Color information. Looking at https://beta-static.septa.org/metro/ which shows L B T G D M colors. Doing view source shows

/*METRO Colors */
.kb-svg-icon-icon-B-Solid {color: #ff6600;}
.kb-svg-icon-icon-test {color: #0693e3;}
.kb-svg-icon-icon-M-Solid {color: #60269E;}
.kb-svg-icon-icon-T-Solid {color: #61A60E;}
.kb-svg-icon-icon-D-Solid {color: #E6427A;}
.g-fill {fill: #FFD600;}

The SVG code that generates the squares uses the following classes for the CSS:

  • L Line Icon → kb-svg-icon-icon-test
  • B Line Icon → kb-svg-icon-icon-B-Solid
  • Trolley Line Icon → kb-svg-icon-icon-T-Solid
  • G Line Icon → g-fill
  • D Line Icon → kb-svg-icon-icon-D-Solid
  • M Line Icon → kb-svg-icon-icon-M-Solid

And... what is the used font ?
En rouge (talk) 02:29, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@En rouge:
The "1" suggests Helvetica or Arial, but SEPTA's "G" is tall/thin, so perhaps condensed bold. Liberation Sans has a slab-serif "1".
The single-letter (family) symbols use a smaller font; compare G versus G1.
SVG with curves can be pulled from the embedded SVG at https://beta-static.septa.org/metro/ (but there are artifacts at the bottom edge).

@UnexpectedSmoreInquisition:
Do you request:
  • a full vector drawing: spider crab + man at scale
  • a mixed photo: real spider crab (color) photo + man drawing, at scale
  • a full photo: real spider crab + real man (as your second B/W sample photo, but in color I suppose)
yours, En rouge (talk) 02:43, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
A full vector for a more direct comparison, possibly showing the crab from a separate front and top POV. Best regards, UnexpectedSmoreInquisition (talk) 03:09, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

text in SVG (sheet index)[edit]

Request
How could I improve the readability of the text in the SVG for lower sizes (for comparison, a jpeg with similar text). --Enhancing999 (talk) 08:54, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)

Use bigger fonts. The SVG font size is 1/6 the box height (20 px / 120 px). The JPEG fonts are relatively larger. Larger fonts means some names will not fit the width; the JPEG uses two lines for some names (see 1185) and abbreviations for others (see 1126). The JPEG also uses a even larger font for the map number. Glrx (talk) 17:24, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Glrx: Thanks for your advice. I increased font-sizes and added classes for longer names (>12 chars) and sheet numbers.
I hesitate to add more abbreviations. I split the "bis"-numbers on two lines, but left the name of 1185 on 1 line. Enhancing999 (talk) 20:08, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
