English: A sluice — a water channel that is controlled at its head by a gate.

A sluice gate is traditionally a wooden or metal plate which slides in grooves in the sides of the channel. Sluice gates are commonly used to control water levels and flow rates in rivers and canals, and for logging and mining materials transport.

Nederlands: Een sluis (ook wel: overlaat) houdt het waterpeil van een rivier of kanaal in stand, maar maakt in tegenstelling tot een stuw scheepvaart wel mogelijk.

Deutsch: Diese Kategorie ist für wasserbauliche Anlagen zur Wasserstandsregulierung, die im Deutschen Schütz, regional auch Stellfalle genannt werden. Schleusen für die Schifffahrt werden unter Category:Canal locks eingeordnet, auch wenn sie an Flüssen liegen.

Français : Un sluice ou rampe de lavage est un canal, le plus souvent en bois, garni de tapis ou de moquette et de tasseaux, dans lequel on fait passer les alluvions aurifères pour en extraire l'or.

L'écluse (voir Category:Canal locks) par contre est un ouvrage d'art hydraulique implanté dans un canal ou un cours d'eau pour le rendre navigable et permettre aux bateaux de franchir des dénivellations.
